What is Function & Form?

Function & Form is more than a company name to us. It is a philosophy and an approach we take in building our brand and the products that we create. Conceived in 1999, and brought to fruition in 2005, we are on a mission to inspire the world with our products and concepts.

From the automobiles, to the individuals behind the car, to the lives lived by the individuals, we believe we can express this through our product designs, engineering, and packaging. We strive to look for innovative ways to contribute to our customers’ lifestyles, by always thinking ahead and outside of the box. We choose to go the path not taken by other companies, and dare to be different. This is more than suspension products, this is a lifestyle, an experience, a Brand: The Function & Form Brand. We represent different cultures. We are an extension of our customers, so you know that anything we do, we believe in to the fullest.

The Function & Form brand

What is the best setup for my car, Type Ones or Type Twos? I don’t do much tracking and want a comfortable ride.

Type One coilovers were made for those who want an affordable coilover that they can put on their daily driver, yet are durable enough to handle the occasional track day if you wish.

Our Type Two coilovers were made for the enthusiast who wants the adjustability of both height and damping. The spring rates on the Type Two’s are typically a little more aggressive and stiffer.

Which is best for you? That is always subjective…we can only produce the products and leave the tough decisions to you. Either way, you are getting a quality coilover with the company to back you up.

How much can I lower my car on Function and Form suspension?

Lowering height varies per application and some suspension designs of vehicles limit how much a car can be lowered and still function properly.

We aim to have all of our lines meet a lowering range of 1-2 inches (or more) on many applications. We always suggest keeping in mind road conditions in your area as that can play a major role in driving comfort and maintenance of the coilovers.

Please remember that when lowering the car at any level, handling characteristics of the vehicle changes. We always recommend that our customers take their vehicle to get a proper alignment to correct the toe and camber setting for your height.

Can I buy replacement parts? Are your shocks replaceable?

We do have replacement shocks available for a majority of our Type 1 and Type 2 coilovers, as well as a variety of other replacement parts for your coilovers which you can check out in the Parts section of our website.

For Type 3, Type 4 and Type 5 replacement shocks, they may need to be special/made-to-order as these kits are usually benchmade-to-order. If you’re looking for replacement shocks for these kits, contact us via email and be prepared to submit your serial number to us.

To ensure accurate fitment, obtain your serial number for your current Function and Form shocks and place it in the notes section for us to view when processing your order.

Our suspension kits do go through design generations so parts such as shocks may be sold out and discontinued depending on how old your kit is. If you have any questions or concerns on replacement parts ordering, contact us to make sure we get you the right information.

Where can I find the serial number?

The serial number is a 7-8 digit code located on your struts/shocks. The serial number is on a sticker that’s typically located on the top of the shock body underneath the rubber dust boot. 7 digit serial numbers usually start with a “3” and for 8 digit codes, your serial number usually starts with “F2”.

With the serial number we can usually tell you how old your kit is which is important when ordering replacement parts since our coilovers, and even air suspension, go through generational design changes throughout the years and some parts may be discontinued.

Do you guys sell complete struts? I just need one/two struts for my car.

Unfortunately, we do not sell complete struts brand new and ready to go, nor are we able to split up complete kits since each strut has a specific serial number to that set/kit.

If you just need certain parts to repair/refresh your suspension, you can check out our replacement parts section of our website.

Otherwise, feel free to contact our customer support team to see what other options you may have.

Will you develop a suspension for my car? Do you guys make something for (Year/Make/Model), I don't see it in your store?

We may already have your application in development! We are consistently developing new applications year round and keeping a close eye on the market around us.

Feel free to send us an e-mail regardless and we can inform you if your application is on the way. Input and feedback is always helpful and allows us to better serve you, the customer. Giving us your chassis code helps us out too!

We get many requests daily on all sorts of applications; however, we must see serious interest in an application before we take the time, money, and effort to engineer any products.

How often should I replace my suspension?

We recommend fully replacing your Function and Form suspension every 5 to 6 years or 50,000-60,000 miles, whichever comes first. This is the interval for most use cases. Driving through rough weather/road conditions (i.e. winter/potholes), or taking your car regularly to the track where it’s exposed to high temperatures on a frequent basis lowers this interval.

Replacement parts are available in most cases but our suspension designs do go through generational changes. Depending on the age of the kit, it may be more cost effective to purchase an entirely new kit than to keep buying replacement shocks/parts.

As we introduce new generations of products, we must also inform you that we will be discontinuing parts support for older generations. This decision was made after careful consideration, taking into account various factors such as technological advancements, evolving customer needs, and market demands. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

I have a warranty covered issue. How do I resolve it?

For more information on our warranty and/or how to submit a warranty claim, check out our warranty info page. Be prepared to submit photos, your serial number (for coilovers/struts), and any applicable mechanic’s reports. All warranty claims are handled through e-mail.

I'm local to you guys, can I pick up my order in-person?

We are closed to the public unfortunately. If you’re in Southern California and you place an order before 1pm PST on a business day, most in-stock coilovers orders ship same day and arrive within 2 days.

Does your suspension come with camber plates?

Many MacPherson style suspension systems come with camber plates for our Type 2 coilovers.

If you are unsure, contact us and we can let you know if the application that you are interested in comes with adjustable top mount camber plates.

Double wishbone suspensions do not come with adjustable top mount camber plates. The camber is adjusted differently. Therefore they are not needed on double wishbone type suspension. There are other aftermarket companies that may offer camber kits. As always, we recommend getting your alignment done professionally to ensure you have the proper alignment specifications and get to enjoy your new suspension to the fullest!

What goes into the design and engineering of your product?

We first start with the OEM suspension and specs. Fitment is always a priority with our products. We also strive to build OEM quality products that will give the customer peace of mind for years to come. We take the OEM damping characteristics and the desired damping characteristics by customers and find a happy medium of comfort and performance. We then road test our products.

The majority of our customers use their cars daily with occasional track time. Yet daily driving comfort cannot be sacrificed and neither can durability. We road test our suspensions thousands of miles before release in everyday real world situations. Even though we gear our products for street applications, many of our applications see “Track Day” time with smiles and excitement by the users. We consider that an added perk to our suspension products.

Developing new coilover applications does take time and is often a lengthy process. Therefore, new applications may take some time before they are ready to be offered to the public.

How do I know I have the correct spring preload? How do I reset the preload on my coilovers?

Spring preload can be reset by adjusting the spring perch/locking collars and with a tape measure. Luckily for you, we can show you how to do this yourself on our tech tips page by watching the How to Reset Preload video.

I want my car to be at the OEM/stock height (or above).

First and foremost, our coilovers are NOT an OE replacement product. The history of coilovers is traditionally rooted in motorsports, with the main objective to drop the center of gravity, so you will not likely find aftermarket coilovers that match OE height. In general, our coilovers at “max height” sit 1” below OE.

We primarily specialize in passenger cars that see daily driving, track use or show car use. You may want to reach out to companies that cater more in the truck/SUV/offroad space if you’re looking to raise your vehicle.

Our Type 4 line of coilovers rides the most similarly to OE but sportier. With all of our lines, ride height is independent of spring rate, so you should be able to adjust according to your needs.

Do you guys have merch? I have your suspension and love your brand!

And we love you! We do have a Function and Form merchandise section of our store where you can find shirts, hats, stickers and even Nobori flags, among other things!

Do you guys offer service discounts to military and/or first responders?

We do offer service discounts to military and first responders via VerifyPass. Thank you for your service!
