Hyundai IONIQ 5 Coilover Installation Instructions.
Welcome to a Hyundai IONIQ 5 coilover installation instructions. This detailed guide provides step-by-step instructions to ensure a smooth installation process. We’ve included the recommended tools and precise torque specs straight from the manufacturer. This Function and Form Type 4 Coilover kit will work with any variant of the IONIQ 5: this includes two wheel drive, all wheel drive, and the infamous “N”. The vehicle we used for this installation was a 2WD version with tire specs of 235/55/19. We recommend that you perform an alignment a week after installation this gives some time for the suspension to settle.
Tools Needed:
- Socket: 21mm, 19mm, 17mm, 14mm, 12mm.
- Impact wrench.
- Ratchet.
- Spanner wrenches (provided with kit).
- Flat head screwdriver.
- Flashlight (optional).
Initial Measurements
Before installation begins make sure to measure from center of wheel to fender and determine how low you would like it to be. Here are the measurements we had before installation:
Front – 17 5/8″
Rear – 18 3/8″
Properly jack up vehicle at designated lift points.
Remove wheels – lug size is 21mm.
Remove wheel sensor and brake line bracket with a 12mm socket.
Remove end link with a 17mm socket.
Remove lower mount 17mm bolt and 19mm nut.
Remove 14mm top hat nuts and remove strut.
Release the lower mount perch and adjust coilover to desired height by spinning the lower mount. Do not adjust height with spring perches these adjust spring preload.
Click here for video on how to reset preload.
Remove lower mount shock damper with 14mm nut and install on coilover.
Install front coilover and hand tighten top 14mm nuts with washers. (Torque Spec: 39 lb-ft)
Slide in lower mount into spindle. The top mounting hole on the lower mount is oval to give you camber adjustment we recommend placing it in the center for minimal tire wear and will be set properly when you get your alignment. (Torque Spec: 115 lb-ft)
Install end links with a 17mm socket. (Torque Spec: 72 lb-ft)
Reattach brake bracket with a 12mm nut. (Torque Spec: 9 lb-ft)
Clip in wheel speed sensor.
Torque down top hat 14mm nuts. (Torque Spec: 39 lb-ft)
Install wheel with 21mm socket. (Torque Spec: 79 lb-ft)
This completes the front install.
Rear installation
Remove wheel lug nuts and wheel with 21mm socket.
Remove shock top mount 14mm nuts.
Support rear lower mount with jack then remove 19mm nut and bolt from shock lower mount.
Next remove 19mm nut and bolt from spindle.
Carefully and slowly lower jack to release spring tension and remove spring.
Remove top hat from OEM shock by first removing the plastic cover with a trim tool or thin flat screwdriver then using a 14mm socket to remove top hat.
Remove dust boot and bump stop and only install the top hat on new F2 rear strut.
Torque 14mm top hat nut. (Torque Spec 79 ft-lb)
To set your rear ride height, first measure the OEM spring height. Use this as a reference when adjusting the height of the new coilover springs with the provided adjusters.
Make sure to leave at least 1 inch of thread above the adjustment perches at the highest setting.
Place the spring with the adjusters on top and ensure it fits into the OEM insulator on the lower control arm.
Release the red shock perch on the shock, then mount the rear shock by torqueing the 14mm top hat bolts. (Torque Spec 36 ft-lb)
Use a jack to support the lower mount until the control arm hole aligns with the spindle hole. Slide in the 19mm bolt and nut, then torque them down. (Torque Spec: 115 lb-ft)
Rotate the shock as close as possible to the mounting hole, then use the jack to compress the spring for final alignment before sliding in the 19mm bolt and nut.
Tighten the 19mm bolt and nut securing the lower shock mount. (Torque Spec: 115 lb-ft)
Tighten the shock perch with provided spanner wrenches
Install rear wheels with 21mm socket. (Torque Spec: 79 lb-ft)
This completes Hyundai IONIQ 5 Coilover Install.
Measurements after install:
